Mike Gray BSc(hons) MRICS
Mike is the founder and a director of Axiom Building Consultants. He qualified as a chartered building surveyor in 2002 after graduating in building surveying from Reading University. Mike worked for international consultancies in London and Manchester before relocating to New Zealand in 2011. Mike leads the delivery of services across the North Island from our Auckland office.
Mike provides high-value and strategic consultancy services to clients across New Zealand, specialising in due diligence, reinstatement, defects/damage analysis and sustainability, with post-graduate qualifications in law and quantity surveying. He’s also an IRATA rope access technician, and specialist in high access work certified in the use of fall arrest systems and elevated work platforms. Mike can be found assessing the facades and roofs of medium and high-rise buildings from Auckland and Wellington in the north, to Christchurch in the south.
Chris Ross- BSc(Hons), MNZIBS, AssocRICS
Chris’ passion for the built environment was sparked early, inspired by the television series Property Ladder. He began his career in the carpentry trade before pursuing formal study, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Building Surveying from the University of Ulster in the North of Ireland.
Chris started his professional career in building control before relocating to Aotearoa in 2009. Over the past 16 years, he has worked within a large multi‑disciplinary building consultancy, developing extensive experience as a building surveyor, project manager, and expert witness across a wide range of commercial, residential, and public‑sector projects.
This breadth of experience has equipped Chris with strong technical expertise, sound commercial judgement, and a practical understanding of risk—qualities that underpin the clear, reliable, and trusted advice he provides to clients.
In 2026, Chris was appointed Director of Axiom Building Consultants, where he contributes to the firm’s strategic leadership while continuing to deliver high‑quality building surveying, project management, and expert advisory services. His approach aligns closely with Axiom’s values of technical excellence, integrity, and client‑focused outcomes.
Chris is a Registered Building Surveyor with the New Zealand Institute of Building Surveyors (NZIBS), an Associate Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (AssocRICS), and a member of the Society of Construction Law New Zealand (SCL).
GEOFF MATTHEWS PgDip BSc(Hons) MRICS
Geoff is a director of Axiom Building Consultants. He has worked with all the main asset classes of property in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and at all stages of the property life cycle. Geoff was accepted as a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in 2009 and joined Axiom in 2021 to provide a new way of working, for both himself, and his clients.
Geoff worked for large international multi-disciplinary real estate firms in Birmingham UK, gaining a wide range of experience, specialising in technical due diligence, contract administration and the resolution of lease reinstatement claims. After moving to New Zealand in 2015, his focus has remained on delivering these high-value specialist services to the commercial property sector. Geoff is also a qualified drone (UAV) operator allowing him to apply his knowledge of buildings to aerial surveying.
LEON GOODWIN - BSc(Hons), MRICS, MNZIBS, PMP
Educated at the prestigious school of the built environment at Bristol University, Leon commenced his professional career working for a number of consulting firms in central London advising a range of clients from investment banks to social housing providers. This gave him a wealth of experience before emigrating to New Zealand with his family in 2011.
Leon has gained invaluable experience over a number of years consulting for the largest building surveying consultancy in New Zealand. Leon loves getting to work advising owners on how to address building failures such as weathertightness, earthquake damage and other issues, and more importantly, how the needs of the client are met in a concise and practical way.
Leon is a Chartered and Registered Building Surveyor, Qualified construction Project Manager, Member of the construction Law society of New Zealand and licensed drone pilot
